In 1985 The First Congregational Church embarked
on a new model of
missions.
Rather than the older, more traditional “donor-recipient” model, the church wanted to embark on a
more personal way of being engaged in Christian missions, one that would be
characterized as being “mutually beneficial” and “mutually enriching”, one that
would enable us to enter into a deeper level of friendship with those of other
races and other cultures, recognizing the diversity and the integrity of all of
God’s Creation.
While there is much that we have in abundance that we can and
should use to elevate the well-being of others; there’s also much that we can
learn from other communities and other cultures.
And so, in a spirit of
humility, we began to think of Mission as Partnership, and in the ensuing years,
we have found that these cross cultural, mutually beneficial, mutually enriching
partnerships have brought tremendous vitality to the life of our congregation.
