ANNUAL REPORT

 of

THE LADIES BENEVOLENT SOCIETY [1816-2005]

The purpose of the Ladies Benevolent Society is to cultivate the Spirit of Christ in every area of human life and to enlist the community in a fellowship of worship, education, service, and giving, to support the programs of The First Congregational Church, Old Lyme, Connecticut, as it serves in the communality, the state, and throughout the world.

LBS has developed entertaining programs for men and women of our congregation and the community. We have educational and diverse programs and seek local speakers and entertainers. Our monthly luncheons and programs have been consistent in attendance, and we are serving delicious meals for $5.00. The Financial Report for 2004 lists the Mission Gifts to the Church and to charities in Old Lyme and surrounding towns.

The outstanding, exciting and successful annual White Elephant Sale makes possible. We netted $54,661 in 2004. This service to the community is chaired by Bob Davis and his excellent chairpersons of the various departments. We give thanks to him and all the many people involved who have spent hours and hours of labor preparing to make this event so successful. This can only happen with the participation of the congregation and the community. Take a moment to scan our LBS Budget and you will realize our commitment is truly amazing.

We have also started a new venture at the beginning of December 2004 called "Elephants in Winter" selling holiday items, as well as handmade crafts by the Sewing Group. It was a very successful sale thanks to the help of many "elves" and netted $4,417. We hope to make this an annual event .Our Sewing Group consisting of about six ladies had a very successful year earning $2,865. They are to be commended for their skills and dedication.  The  LBS continues to partner with Christian Education and our families and their children-in the Sunday School. We are happy to be able to support their programs financially. Our "Tools of Hope and Blankets" drive for Church World Service amounted to $3,861 in 2004, thanks to the generosity of the congregation. For years Church World Service has provided blankets, tools, tents, emergency supplies, etc. all over the world.

The LBS continues to fund meals through the "Care Connection" for local families in time of need. Homemade soups, bread and casseroles are prepared by church members for this program. Church plates and pitchers continue to be sold, and the profit is donated to the summer camp fund for the Storefront school children.

The LBS Board continues to work to support these programs. I thank the Board and our congregation for their dedication and involvement in our 189 year old organization.
